Green River Bike Rip
Dover, VT to Greenfield, MA
What to Expect
The Green River Rip is a classic gravel ride and a favorite among riders who know Franklin County’s back roads best. This guided, mostly downhill tour begins high in the hills of southern Vermont and traces the headwaters of the Green River as it descends into Massachusetts, finishing in Greenfield. With more than 2,000 feet of net elevation loss, the ride delivers long, flowing descents on quiet gravel roads punctuated by waterfalls, forested valleys, and historic crossings.
We start near the base of Mount Snow in East Dover, Vermont, where clear days offer expansive views across southern Vermont and western Massachusetts. After an initial paved descent, the route quickly transitions to classic Vermont gravel, winding through open pastureland before narrowing into the Green River Valley. Early in the ride, the river is little more than a stream, but as we continue downhill, waterfalls cascade off the steep valley walls and the river steadily grows in size and power.
The heart of the ride follows Green River Road, a stretch made famous by the Deerfield Dirt Road Randonée. This section is widely considered one of the most beautiful gravel corridors in the region, with towering forest, moss‑covered rock faces, and multiple wooden covered bridges that feel lifted from another era. The combination of remoteness, smooth gravel, and constant downhill flow makes this section unforgettable.
As we approach the Massachusetts border, the valley gradually opens and the terrain softens. The final miles roll gently toward Greenfield, offering a relaxed finish after a long, rewarding descent. A support vehicle shadows the route on nearby roads, allowing riders to focus on the experience with the reassurance of backup if needed.
