River Road Bike Loop
Deerfield, Montague, Sunderland

What to Expect

The River Road Loop is one of the most popular and iconic bike rides in the Connecticut River Valley, and it begins right outside the Adventure East shop in Sunderland. This guided loop showcases the agricultural heritage, river scenery, and historic mill towns that define the lower Pioneer Valley.

Leaving Sunderland, we cross the Connecticut River and turn onto River Road in Deerfield, beginning a gentle uphill stretch through some of the region’s most productive farmland. Broad fields, historic farmhouses, and long river views create a classic New England landscape, and guides share insights into the area’s agricultural history and ongoing farm‑to‑table traditions.

Crossing back over the river, we enter Turners Falls and continue toward Montague, passing through a landscape shaped by water power and industry. A highlight of the route is our stop near the Book Mill on the banks of the Sawmill River, a beloved local landmark that reflects the area’s industrial past and creative present.

Turning south toward Sunderland, the final leg of the ride offers rolling terrain with glimpses of the Connecticut River, wooded hillsides, and open farmland. The loop finishes with a relaxed descent back into town, providing a satisfying and scenic conclusion to the ride.

The pace throughout the tour is steady and conversational, with time to stop, regroup, and appreciate both the scenery and the stories that make this route a local favorite.
